Street/valley Bohinj look

It’s been quite some time sine I’ve fallen in love with the beautiful Bohinj, Slovenia and i’ve been covering topics connected to this area for suite some time. But most of my blog posts remained quite general unil now so I decided to be a bit more specific about how one can spend time in apartments Bohinj. On one of my other blogs, I’ve written a lot about different names for sneakers around the world. Great end-of-season ski in Courchevel!

Last year at the same period, as days were getting longer and warmer, my friends and I just had an urge to go skiing one last time before putting away our equipment. We chose to spend our April ski vacation in Courchevel, part of the Three Valleys (Trois Vallées) in France and, quite frankly, we made a great choice!

Courchevel offers 150 km of downhill pistes served by 62 chairlifts. No waiting in line there! And my expert skier self, my novice skier friend’s girlfriend and all those in between were pleased alike by the wide variety of pistes: the beginners’ zone (ZEN) and fun zones, 27 green runs, 44 blue runs, 38 red runs and 10 black runs. The slopes are always very well maintained in Courchevel (especially important for a pleasant end-of-season ski experience), thanks to the hundreds of snow cannons and dozens of “piste-bashers”.

We had rented an apartment for our group because it’s Courchevel accommodations‘ cheapest option. If I could afford it, I spotted a few interesting four-star hotels that could meet my needs but… maybe some other time…

Like in any European ski resort, après-ski venues are great in Courchevel. We didn’t go out every night, we were too tired from full days spent on the slopes. When we did gather enough energy to go out, we discovered that Courchevel certainly can be used as a place to get wild at night after a long day of skiing.

After writing all that… I think I’ll go again this year. There is still the second half of March and almost the whole of April before Courchevel’s closing!

Trip to Bled

In my last post about holidays in Bohinj I also mentioned the trip me and my wife had to Bled a couple years ago. Similar to our Bohinj trip we also decided for camping Bled experience instead of hotel Bled experience. It is true that camping Bled is much more crowded than camping in Bohinj and that we weren’t thrilled about the thousands of tourists but was still worth it.

The advantage in choosing hotel Bled or camping Bled instead of Bohinj versions (next to the church on the island of course) is that you can go out in the evening and party, which isn’t really an option in Bohinj. The places are only half an hour drive apart, so it’s not hard to change your mind on the spot. Our good friends who don’t like camping found a room in hotel Bled and found it really nice, the only thing they didn’t like was that hotel Bled is always stuffed with elder tourists eating cakes. If you choose camping Bled, of course you won’t have that problems, at least not in that magnitude.

Puy Saint Vincent is part of the enormous Grande Galaxie Ski Area, area which offers more than 200 pathways. And after going down all the slopes, there are all kinds of other thrills available. Snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice-skating can all be done here and, for the adrenalin-hungry among you, why not try paragliding. You can even ride four-wheelers or snowmobiles to pass a scenic day without too much effort on your part.

La Plagne’s history is a bit different from other ski towns’. La Plagne use to be a place where the military stored certain weapons to use later against the Germans. Although it is a sad episode of French history, the memory of those who fought through the hardest times and toughest wars is not forgotten. A cenotaph stands in the center of town, dedicated to the British aircrew that flew by to drop ammunition.

In the early 1960s, the La Plagne town began to change for the worse and the population quickly diminished. People couldn’t find work and general life conditions were too hard, so many families packed up and headed for the cities.
Some locals, however, stayed to rescue the town. Four townships in the area got together and brainstormed in order to save their village. Since locals had been skiing in the area for a long time, they had the idea to bring outside people to ski in the region. At first, the few tourists that came slept with families or rented the few available rooms. In the second half of the 1960s, the locals constructed some lifts and built a couple small accommodations for tourists, they also asphalted a road. People who came as tourist would often help make the pistes on their free time and it took a lot of volunteers to get the pistes ready in the ongoing years.

La Plagne is now part of the Paradiski ski area. If you’ve never heard of Paradiski, it is one of not only Europe’s but also the world’s largest skiing and snowboarding places in the world. La Plagne lies in the Savoie Valley in France. What an evolution!

Alpe d’Huez French ski resort, in the Grandes Rousses, is also called the Island of the Sun because some years have recorded several hundred days of visible sunshine. The panoramas are fantastic! Mont Cervin and Mont Blanc can be spotted in the distance from atop Pic Blanc. The ski area here covers over ten thousand ha and offers 230 kilometers of pistes.

The runs in Alpe d’Huez offer some serious skiing. There are 123 total runs and nearly 70 intermediate ski runs. Now that the best of the numbers are told, there are also 36 beginner runs, 17 advanced runs and the long Pit Blanc run, which covers well over 15 km from a height above 3,330 meters. The ski resort can lift almost 100,000 skiers per hour with 84 ski lifts functioning throughout the day. The lines are never backed up and if a line forms, it won’t last very long.
Advanced skiers won’t be bored in Alpe d’Huex. La Sarenne, one of the longest advanced runs in Europe, presents a 2,230-meter drop that can keep you busy for a big part of the day. There are dozens of snow cannons to keep the slopes covered in the best white powder you can get for your ski pass money. Additionally, this is one of the places to get out and about if you’re into cross-country skiing.

All types of accommodation are available in Alpe d’Huez: cabins, chalets, apartments, houses, hotels, and self-catering studios. Though a bit pricy, the Quartier des Jeux is where to be to easily access the shops and restaurants. The Quartier Bergers is a little toned down and is about twenty minutes away on foot from the town center, it is about the only place where you’ll have a fair chance to find cheaper, budget friendly accommodation. Getting to Alpe d’Huez is quite easy too, as Alpe d’Huez is a two to three hours drive from the Grenoble, Lyon and Chambery airports.

Here’s what’s up in April:

The National Mountain Riders Association offers two days of events to bring together everyone wanting to preserve nature, local actors as well as the general public. The first weekend of April, exhibitions, lectures, themed games, snowboard and ski contests open to all and concerts are offered to everybody sensitive to the mountain environment and its sustainable development, on the occasion of the 4th Mountain Riders Respect Festival.

On Wednesdays April 1st, 8th and 15th, you can participate to the activity Discover the Vanoise Express - Plan-Peisey. From 10.30 to 12.00, ride the Vanoise Express between La Plagne and Les Arcs: that is 1800m long at 45km/h.

Every Thursday, when the weather conditions permit it, the activity First Tracks is held at the top of the Grizzly lift out of Peisey-Vallandry. There, you can give yourself an early morning boost with breakfast in the piste patrols’ hut before cutting the first tracks ahead of the big rush.

Les Deux Alpes ski resort, in France, is opened for June 13th to August 29th for the summer season. During that period, the choice of activities related to mountain biking is as wide as one could expect from an internationally acclaimed destination. Here are a few of the event not to miss:

The “Mondial du VTT Free Raid Classic VTT Mag” takes place from June 18th to June 21st, and welcomes all kinds of mountain bike enthusiasts. The four days covered by the Mondial are comprised of exhibitions, bike shows, bike races and if you get inspired, you can get your bike out and try one of the new itineraries that go from 3200 meters to 700 meters. Some of the itineraries are especially designed for kids.

One month later, from July 17th to the 19th, the now famous Mountain of Hell will take place on the mountain bike trails of Les 2 Alpes. This event brings together amateurs and pros with the main goal of enjoying the freeride potential of the area in a friendly atmosphere.
The “Enduro séries” is not to miss because quite spectacular. During one full weekend of race, the riders are alone, competing against the chronometer. They have to complete 10 races, representing around 10 km of downhill in total. It takes place August 15th and 16th.

The following weekend is held the “Marco Pantani Memorial Cycling” event. Open to all, the races are no walk in the park and experienced cyclists will find a challenge at their scale. On Saturday 22nd, a 9 km time trial takes place and the following day, a sportive race of 164 km takes the cyclists to the Col d’Ornon , the Col de Parquetout and the Alpe du Grande Serre before finishing at the top of Les Deux Alpes.

The story of how Meribel become one of the most famous ski resort in the world is quite interesting. In 1938, Mr. Peter Lindsay, an Englishman, happened upon Meribel—then a village of farmers and herders. After the War ravaged this part of Europe, Mr. Lindsay came back to Meribel, to put it on the world ski destination map. Meribel Alpina was born in the late 1940′ and, slowly and surely it became a top ski holiday destination. Lindsay wasn’t even in it for the money, either (he already made quite a bit). As people came to ski, Lindsay gave the land back to the locals who in return opened up hotels and hostels for the visitors. His investment way back then is still fructifying today, with hundreds of families benefiting from tourism.
With the help of the architect Christian Durupt, Lindsay created an eco friendly atmosphere that used the local natural wealth to build the resort from the ground up. This unity with nature still transpires from every Meribel’s pores because of the stone, slate and wood used then, and still now, to erect hotels, bars, restaurants and other edifices.

If architecture is worth the trip, it is not the main reason that attracts people to Meribel, though. Skiers will have their hands full trying to cover the resort’s 372 miles of slopes, not to mention its many off-pistes. The center recently expanded its network of runs by opening new ones on Mont Vallon and in the top of the valley. The new-and-improved ski resort in Meribel now boasts 11 green runs, 33 blue runs, 21 red runs, and 9 black runs, all of which are well-maintained and never lacking snow.
